Bill Number for Nondiscrimination Relief |
| May 23, 1997 TO: Retirement Administrators/CEOs FROM: Cindie Moore, NCTR Washington Counsel RE: H.R. 1740 is House Bill Providing Nondiscrimination Relief Reps. Portman (R-OH) and Cardin (D-MD) introduced H.R. 1720 on May 22. The bill would make permanent the current temporary moratorium of the application of the nondiscrimination rules to state and local government plans. H.R. 1740 has 34 supporters, the two sponsors and the 32 cosponsors listed below: Ensign (R-NV) 18 of these cosponsors sit on the Ways and Means Committee, which must pass the bill before the full House may consider it. Those members are: Portman, Cardin, Ensign, Matsui, Crane, English, Houghton, Johnson, Kennelly, Kleczka, Levin, McNulty, Ramstad, Thomas, Weller, and Hulshof. The Senate relief, S. 622, was introduced by Sen. Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. Conrad (D-ND) on April 22.
