Federal Update

December 6, 2000 Breaking News

The Senate approved cloture on the bankruptcy reform bill on December 5 by a vote of 67-31 (H.R. 2415).  A final vote is expected on December 7, at which point the bill will go to the President.  The House passed it on October 12.  As I’ve reported earlier, the President will likely veto it.

News for action on the tax bill (H.R. 2614) that includes pension reform continues to be grim.  Senate leaders want to defer action on it to next year.  The Medicare portion of the bill may be considered separately, as early as December 7.

No news has surfaced on our third issue:  possible restrictions on state and local government use of Social Security numbers.

            I’ll keep you posted.
